Signs Of A Termite Infestation

Termites are one of the most dangerous pests you can have a problem with because they can damage the structural integrity of your home. For this reason, it’s extremely important to hire a pest control professional as soon as you see signs of termites in or around your home! Termites burrow deep within wooden structures and eat away at them from the inside. To help minimize the damage that termites cause to your home, it’s crucial to keep your eye out for the signs that you might have an infestation!

Termite Swarmers

One of the most telltale signs of a termite infestation is to see termite swarmers, or winged adult termites. These swarmers can be alive or dead, and you can identify them by looking for black or dark brown insects that are about a half inch in length with ¾ inch wings. Swarmers are the only termites that live outside the wood or soil that the colony is feeding on. It takes years for a termite colony to grow enough to produce swarmers, meaning it’s essential to contact a pest control professional as soon as you notice them. Killing the swarmers alone won’t solve your termite problem, they’re just a good sign that you have one.

Mud Tubes

Another sign of a termite infestation is mud tubes around the foundation of your home. You can tell if a termite infestation is active by breaking off a section of a mud tube and observing over the next few days if the tube becomes repaired. Simply destroying these tubes won’t solve your termite problem, they’ll just build more or find alternate ways to get into your home. If you notice mud tubes around the foundation or in the crawl space of your house, you should contact a pest control professional immediately!

Termite Damage

One more telltale sign of a termite infestation is finding the damage they’ve made to the wooden structure of your home. Termite damage often looks like “mazes” or “tunnels” in the wood around your home. Termite damage can occur on the interior or exterior of your house. If you suspect your home has termite damage, you should contact a pest control professional to either eradicate the problem or confirm that the infestation is not active.
