Cockroaches are annoying, disease-spreading bugs that are often found inside and outside of homes in Louisiana. Roaches are known for their ability to breed quickly, resulting in infestations that grow quite rapidly. Cockroaches love the hot and humid weather in Louisiana, making it a breeding ground for many different cockroach species. In this article, we’ll talk about a few of the most common types of cockroaches that can be found in Louisiana! If you have any questions about cockroaches or if you are experiencing a cockroach infestation in your New Orleans area home or business, contact Pied Piper Pest Control today to get a free cockroach extermination estimate!

German Cockroach

The German Cockroach is the most common type of cockroach found in the United States, including in Louisiana. These cockroaches have a short reproductive cycle, allowing them to breed extremely rapidly, causing infestations in houses and buildings to grow quickly. German cockroaches can be identified using two dark stripes that can be found right behind their heads.

American Cockroach

American Cockroaches are another common species of cockroach that can be found in Louisiana. These cockroaches have wings that allow them to fly short distances, but they are also extremely quick on their feet. American cockroaches are commonly found around food sources like in pantries, restaurants, and trash storage areas.

Surinam Cockroach

The Surinam Cockroach is a tiny cockroach that loves hanging out in areas with high humidity. These roaches are about a 1/2 inch in size and they enjoy hiding under dirt and debris.

Brown-Banded Cockroach

Brown-Banded Cockroaches are on the smaller side of the cockroach spectrum, usually measuring at around ½”-⅝” long. These cockroaches can be identified by the light brown or tan stripes that can be seen on their wings. Unlike most cockroaches, Brown-Banded Cockroaches prefer drier conditions. For this reason, these roaches can be found in cabinets, dry-storage areas, and in other above-ground surfaces.

Australian Cockroach

Despite its name, Australian Cockroaches are commonly found throughout Louisiana. These cockroaches are typically around 1 ½” long with pale or yellow markings around their heads. Australian cockroaches are attracted to light sources, and therefore are often found flying around light bulbs.
